Absconding

What is Absconding?

Absconding means the failure of an employee to report back to work after 3-4 working days without any prior notice, and without informing the reporting manager or the HR. In case the absence does not get communicated and stretches on endlessly, then the employee may be treated as having absconded. Organizations can handle the case by following the prepared HR policies regarding the approach towards the absconded employees. Example: An employee who had served the company for one year failed to report to work on a Monday. By Friday, that employee had missed work for six consecutive days without providing any explanation or notifying his manager or HR. In this case, management was not informed about the reason for his absence, thus making it a clear case of absconding.

Top Reasons Why Employees Abscond

Employees may leave their jobs without warning or without notice, and they may do so for a number of reasons. Some of the most common factors include:

  • Personal Crisis: Unexpected personal issues such as health problems, family obligations, or other events lead to employees taking unnoticeable and unannounced leave.

  • Job Discontent: Employees may leave their jobs either due to dissatisfaction in their job roles, work environment, compensation, or management.

  • Limited Growth Opportunities: Lack of career progression or learning opportunities within the organization can force employees to seek job opportunities elsewhere.

  • Work-Life Imbalance: Overbearing work demands that interfere with employee well-being can result in quit-without-notice decisions

  • Workplace Conflicts: Disputes with supervisors, colleagues, or inability to suit the needs of workplace culture may compel employees to abscond over fear of confrontation

  • Good Job Offers: Employees may decide to quit at short notice when presented with an attractive offer from another organization

  • Burnout: Prolonged stress, high workloads, or insufficient support can lead to burnout; therefore, such employees will leave the job without notice.

  • No Recognition: Employees might abscond when they feel that their employer fails to recognize and appreciate them.
